Question:
I received an email with a "winmail.dat" attachment. What is it?
Answer:
Emails sent from Outlook using Microsoft Outlook RTF format will be structured as a normal text message with an attached file named "winmail.dat". The winmail.dat file contains the RTF formatting information as well as any attached files. Unfortunately, Outlook is the only email program capable of parsing winmail.dat files. The winmail.dat file format is binary and proprietary to Microsoft. No other email clients are capable of parsing TNEF. The solution is to *not* send RTF formatted email from Outlook. Configure Outlook to send plain-text or HTML formatted email.
