Japanese email is fully supported by the Chilkat Email component. Japanese emails are usually sent using the iso-2022-jp charset, which is an encoding that encompasses many other encodings using escape sequences. (See Wikipedia about iso-2022-jp) Prior to the version released on 6-June-2007, the half-width Katakana escape sequence was not supported. ("ESC ( I" to switch to JIS X 0201-1976 Kana set (1 byte per character)) The Chilkat Email component has been updated to support half-width katakana.
